I think when the show started, the idea was to have Paige and Ashley as the friends/rivals, but ultimately, Ash and Paige had interests that were just too different for them to really fulfill that role. Enter Manny, who fits that role perfectly. I'll be honest, I think like them better as friends rather than enemies, but I also think they're great as rivals.
