For there to be reasonable dramatic conflict, the two sides need to be on some kind of par. Remember when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was confronted with a god? It had to be handicapped, and so Buffy could take advantage of the handicap. For Max to be omnipotant, in any thing, would be too much.
