| ”Of course I know you,” Michael countered back. “You are my favorite cousin.” He had always called Molly that since she was just a little girl. Though he loved Kristina, she was a show stealer. Alexis gave her the most attention because of it. She was a great mother, but every woman had flaws. Molly was young and quiet so she hid complaints, but the sadness in her eyes had shown. Michael had been playing with his cousins at the former DA’s house one day when three-year-old Molly succeeded in building a castle out of blocks. She’d run to tell Alexis to look, but she was sitting at the dinner table reading through briefs and couldn’t be bothered. Kristina had called out to her mother, dressed in one of her work suits. It swallowed her tiny frame whole! She’d told her mother she was a lawyer, just like her. Alexis had laughed and pushed her papers to the side, gathering Kristina in her lap. ‘My mini me’ she said, and Molly just stood off to the side with a puzzled frown. Michael had crouched down to her level and messed up her hair with a smile. That’s when he told her she was his favorite cousin. Molly had broken into the widest grin after that. Twenty some years later, and he still referred to her with that affection. Molly held a special place in the mobster’s heart. She was always good enough for him and would remain that way.
He chuckled when she assured him that the apocalypse was the only occurrence that could slow Paige Morgan down. “Armageddon probably wouldn’t stand a chance against that girl.” She was a survivor, just like her parents. Michael did worry for her as a best friend should, but deep in his gut there was a peace. Paige would kick ass and take names later, he was sure of it. Molly smiled at the image and followed closely through the darkness. Michael noticed minutes later that she’d grown quiet. “You ok?” he whispered. He hadn’t taken Molly for the type of woman to spook but thoughts of her loved ones in danger must have been eating away at her. “Molls…” Michael turned around, fully prepared to comfort, only to stare into the black. He backtracked carefully, but there was no sign of his cousin. He entertained thoughts of her simply taking a wrong turn, but something in his core told Michael she was in trouble. His adrenaline kicked in and Michael began to run through the halls, gun in hand.
He almost slammed into a figure in his haste. “Stop right there,” he growled. He only relaxed after his brother’s voice asked him what the hell he was doing here. “Gavin?” Michael squinted through the darkness to make out his features. It didn’t help that his sibling was wearing leather. Tonight was a dangerous night to blend in. “I’m glad your safe.” He offered a quick slap on the back before addressing his presence. “I came back to tie up some loose ends. Not even here one night before someone’s stabbed.” Michael shook his head in disgust. He was about to suggest Gavin come with him when he realized a girl was hiding behind his brother. He assumed it to be Audrey until he walked closer. A disapproving frown took over his features when he realized it was an Alcazar. “What are you doing with her?” Lainey spelt out trouble. Michael assumed the Ruiz or Valmont family was behind tonight’s chaos, but the Alcazar’s were enemies too. Ruling them out completely would be foolish. “Molly’s in trouble and everyone else we care about, and you’re with…her. Gavin, lets go. She can find her own way out,” he sneered. Reese understood Ridley’s reasoning. Standing here while their loved ones risked their lives was useless. Both women should be lending support, fighting alongside their family but Jamie had told them to stay put. Reese would have loaded her gun and not given it a second thought if she were alone, but if she endangered her son’s friend he would never forgive her. She already had too much to explain to Jamie as it was. Reese did not need another reason to be hated. It might sound selfish and maybe she was, but the former cop found herself resisting her instincts for once and reaching out to hold Ridley back. “I can’t let you leave this room,” she commanded with apologetic eyes. “Jamie wants you safe.” Reese heard another gunshot sound off down the hall and she gritted her teeth to keep her fears suppressed. Jamie had just wounded one of the bad guys, not the other way around. She couldn’t allow her mind to wander into a dark place. Reese was almost calm when a piercing scream echoed off the walls. “To hell with it,” she groaned before checking the bullets in her gun and stepping out in front of Ridley. “Stay behind me.” Reese quietly followed the commotion, fully prepared for whatever horrors she might encounter. She was a trained professional. She might have been off the force for years, but a cop never forgot. It was in their blood.
‘Get off of her!’ Malick was really getting pissed off at the interruptions. Couldn’t he kill this bitch in peace? Ignoring the threat, he continued to squeeze the life out of his victim. He could feel Natalie giving up the fight. When her hands fell from his to her side and her eyes began to close, Malick smiled. “That’s it…” he coaxed when her face turned a shade lighter and her entire body grew limp. He watched as she slipped away from the world and felt no remorse watching the still body beneath him. A sharp pain in his shoulder caused his grip to loosen and when it did Natalie let out the lightest breath. “No!” Malick saw her eyes open and before he knew what was happening Natalie kicked him with the last bit of strength she had. He fell off of her and held his arm, the blood seeping between his fingers. Malick looked up to see a man aiming the gun straight at him. He was demanding Natalie’s attacker to put his hands up? Really? “And what makes you think I’ll comply, pretty boy?” Malick prepared to lunge but was suddenly struck with a blunt object in the head and crumpled to the ground. His began seeing grey spots block his vision and he heard the muffled voice of Natalie yelling run before footsteps faded away from him. When he finally blinked his eyes open the voices whispering close by were not that of Natalie and her savior.
Malick scrambled to his feet and ignored the throbbing pain in his arm as he pressed his body behind the door of the room he was in. He stared through the crack to see a woman he didn’t recognize, followed by his previous victim….Ridley or Randy something. “Fresh meat,” he whispered with a satisfied smile. If he couldn’t strangle Natalie he could strange someone else. Malick refused to leave this mansion without blood on his hands. The two women called out to someone by the name of Jamie and noticed the broken lamp on the floor outside the room. The older woman in front of Ridley held a gun and began walking in his direction. This was almost too perfect. Malick held back his laughter and stayed hidden in the shadows as his guests entered the room carefully, but they weren’t careful enough. As soon as they were far enough in Malick closed the door and flicked on a light. “Ladies,” he greeted. “So nice of you to keep me company,” Malick sneered before tackling the unknown woman. He connected his elbow with her face and knocked the gun from her hand before slamming her hard into a nearby wooden nightstand. He wasted no time unloading the gun into Ridley’s leg. As she screamed and began limping towards the door Malick shook his head. “Haven’t you learned that running away from me only delays the inevitable…” TAG Ridley/Reese __________________ How do I tell you goodbye?
