Citizen’s Fire Academy

Week Four – High Rise Rescue

The firemen are trained to rappel in case there are certain high spots they must get to or down from to rescue folks. This fourth week was one of the funnest nights because we got to rappel down a static line that was connected to the top of the ladder.

Here I am getting all harnassed up:

One last bit of instruction before I go up… I was getting a little nervous. However, a fireman was right beside me the whole time.

Going up…. This was kinda scary because it felt like we were going higher and higher and higher…..

At the top, getting last advice from the fireman….. I was having problems unhooking the safety loop so that I could drop, so he had to help me.

Rapelling! Look how high we were!

Down I go…. But I kept letting the right hand, which was supposed to be at my rear to slow my decent, in front of me. Once it got there, I’d just grip with all my might because I knew if I let go, I’d fall. However, there was another fireman below on belay. However, I called to the one up with me to help me out. He’d grab the rope to hold me while I moved my hand back where it was and he’d tease/lecture me saying, “Keep your hand at your rear!”

Safely on solid land! But I got my hand caught in the d-ring at the bottom and hurt the hand a little. It healed in a few days.

It took several guys to get me unharnessed and all the ropes unhooked

And one shot of the firemen who went up with me…. They really loved this. Many of them rappelled down upside down just for fun and to show off.
