It's terrible writing. And imo you shouldn't have to put down another relationship/couple in order to boost another one. It doesn't make people rethink and go oh actually I was wrong and I'm going to ship LP now, it just makes the fans mad and if anything increase their dislike of them. They don't understand the fans at all.
Aw  I loved that episode, that's one of my favourite moments. He went to so much effort just to keep her in TH  And I loved the quote:
BROOKE: …You did this for me?
LUCAS: (Takes a deep breath.) I wasn’t ready to lose you yet. (Shrugs)
(Brooke is touched and smiles at him.)
LUCAS: So, you, gonna stay or what?
BROOKE: (Speechless) Yeah, of course.
(She rushes forward and hugs him. Lucas smiles happily.)
BROOKE: Oh,… I wasn’t ready to be lost. Thank you.
