Max always felt responsible about everything and he always felt guilty for many reasons. First of all he always felt guilty toward Liz because from his POV he ruined her life and put her in danger and he didn't want her to be in danger for his fault, obviously.
It wasn't a good moment for him because.. lets see: he not only slept with a woman he didn't love and considered it the worst mistake of his life; that woman was also a betrayer who almost sent him and Isabel to death and she was the one who killed Alex. So he discovered that while he was having the argument with Liz she not only was right about everything and he was wrong but he was so 'stupid' because he had the killer with him, he slept with her and he didn't realize the truth. Then the baby, his son, was in danger and he felt guilty about it too especially since "mommy" wanted to deliver him to their enemy
he needed to find him and save him.. but the problem is that he had nothing concrete in order to do it.
his idea was to go there, take the baby and then come back.
But at one point he had to face the truth: he couldn't do it. And it wasn't really his fault. He couldn't know that the plan made by the antarians who created them sucked so much that they had no allies in earth, no informations and only one spaceship that they could use only one time.
some could say that he could have used the granolith and go with Tess even if she was the enemy but Max didn't go and i think that he didn't for many reasons. Ultimately he made the right choice IMO. First of all he never wanted to go there and leave his home so when he got the occasion he got rid of her because he had no duty toward her anymore. He was, in a way, free. It was a human reaction and he obviously thought about what he wanted too and he didn't want to go he wanted to stay here with the people he loved and the woman he loved. He got the chance the change the things he wished he could have changed in the previous scene when he cried. It was obvious that he didn't want to go just like Isabel and Michael. They were all forced.
But i also think that Max chose the safer choice using logic. He knew about the deal with Kivar and if he had died, he couldn't have helped the baby anyway. I think that he thought that there was another way to go on antar and come back here without risking too much.. but then like i said he had to face the truth and he discovered that he really had no way. this made his guilty even more big even if, again, it wasn't his fault.
anyway if we think about it Max never had it easy. 3 years and all hard for many reasons. The only times he was really happy were the times he was with Liz.
at least in the end he, they, got their happy end and he finally found peace. |
