| Racing calms actor/racer Patrick Dempsey

Patrick Dempsey is best known as Dr. Mc Dreamy (Dr. Derek Shepherd) on the popular ABC medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," but race fans know him more as a sports car driver. Actor Dempsey has been a race fan for years but only donned a helmet for the first time a few years ago.
In 2005, Dempsey competed in the Toyota Pro-Celebrity race in the streets of Long Beach, Calif., and his race career powered forward from there. He moved into the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Series and the Panoz GT Racing Series before graduating to the KONI Sports Car Challenge Series, racing Mazda-powered cars. A year ago, he advanced to the GT class of the Rolex Sports Car Series, driving a Mazda RX-8 with team leader Joe Foster and others.
For 2009, Dempsey has become a team owner and will campaign a Mazda RX-8 as often as his hectic schedule permits. Acting requires a tremendous time commitment as does racing, and Dempsey has learned that he must give equal time to each career. "If I miss too many races, I have to play catch-up," Dempsey said in Daytona while practicing for the upcoming Rolex24 at the Daytona International Speedway.
