You weren't addressing this to me, but since Chabo's comments were in response to something I said, I hope you don't mind me replying.
It's actually because of the context that I felt that JKR's comments were meant specifically as a way of softening the blow for the H/Hr shippers. In fact, those are the exact words she used: "I was trying very hard to soften the blow", and she said it right after mentioning that she knew they "were in trouble" after Emerson's comment. That almost sounds like she didn't even originally plan for those two "charged moments" to occur, but she knew how upset some of her fans were about the "delusional" comments, and also knew that they were going to have to take yet another blow in DH when OBHWF finally came together, and so she deliberately put those two moments in there so that H/Hr shippers could have something. In view of all the other emphatic comments she made previously in interviews ("No, they are very platonic friends", "D'you really think they're suited?"), and the utter incredulity with which she always reacted when questioned about a possible romance between Harry and Hermione, it just seems to me like she decided to give the H/Hr shippers a couple of moments they could call their own, and to say that theoretically it could have gone that way under certain circumstances, even though she had never originally planned on it and had never before really understood why some were so convinced it would be H/Hr. And it was really nice of her to do so. Like I said in one of my previous posts, I'm actually glad that the H/Hr shippers now have a JKR quote they can squee over, because they've had such a rough time of it in that area in the past. I'm not criticizing her comments, because once again, I think it was a really nice thing for her to do; I'm just saying that that's how it comes across to me. 
And don't worry, I'm not feeling threatened at all.  On the contrary, that "Ginny is Harry's true soulmate" quote has me feeling even more confident in the awesomess that is H/G, if that's possible.  | __________________ "Hasn't changed much has he?"
