As MySpace Records' first big breakout artist, 21-year-old Kate Voegele meets a lot of people who figure she came to the label's attention by virtue of having a boatload of friends on MySpace.
But in truth, she says, her page was both "totally lame" and running low on friends at that point.
"A lot of people think I must have pimped my MySpace out so much that they couldn't help but sign me," Voegele says. "You know how some people crack the code and friend out everyone in the entire world? That was not the case."
What happened is Tom Anderson, who founded MySpace, decided he wanted a label so he hired John Pikus, an A&R rep Voegele had already showcased for years earlier.
"And he was like 'I don't know if this girl is signed yet, but I want to sign her,'" Voegele says.
Naturally, Anderson followed through by messaging her page to see if she'd been signed yet.
