I think he always related to Remus well too.
I see them having a very quirky but deep friendship.
I think it's quite possible that lupin and Peter would at times feel a little jealous of the bond that Sirius/James had, because I don't see Lupin/Peter being best friends. And also I'm sure while lupin didn't care much about popularity it must have put a wedge between them at some points. Cause I see lupin not being popular because of his own anti social behavior.
