Something scandalous like the real reason the Wilsons adopted Dixon. Maybe one of the parents was somehow responsible (directly or indirectly) for Dixon's being an orphan. So then Dixon would have to be conflicted between hatred for that and love/gratitude for the Wilsons' taking him in.
