Well...

Especially if you're looking at the mindframe of people in 1944...

You can't expect people to be rational or even accomodating when it comes to a part of the world that is considered to be the Holy Land by the three main "Western" religions (if Islam doesn't count as a Western religion, make that three of the world's five big religions).

You can't blame people for wanting a land of their own, a land where they'll be free of persecution (after enduring literally millenia of it). Just as I can't personally fault the people who happened to live in that land for wanting to stay there.

When people want something bad enough, they tend to lose their grasp of certain realities. It's understandable.
