I just totally have Derek's Dad dying of a brain hemorrage or seizure or something neuro because of all the great fan fiction I've read. Every single one of them has Derek's Dad dying like that. Those stories are so great they are stuck in my head, lol! 
Maybe Derek's Dad was a doctor? A surgeon? A neurosurgeon and that's why he wanted to be one. I'm thinking their family is linked to the medical field somehow since Nancy was a doctor and Kathleen was mentioned as a psychiatrist. Definitely in the genes somehow.
