| YOu mean like if there's something in the past that makes him still insecure about what he does to this day?
It would be interesting to have a good solid reason for his insecurities that have been shown in the last 2 seasons.

| Its a shame that he's dead.. but it definitely would be interesting to see what kind of relationship they have.. If it was strained, or if they were the type of father/son who played ball and such.

I'd like to think it has a lot to do with Derek's father dying when he was so young. He became the protector of his mother and four sisters. He was used to them coming to him for support so he doesn't know how to handle someone like Mer who has trouble opening up to him. It also would explain his "hero" complex.
