My answer - who cares, the garage scene was one of many t make us think Kate had Sawyer's son.

Why does he start drinking and popping pills?
It makes no sense to me. Because he sees Christian?

What happened to the sense of guilt they were all supposed to feel?

Maybe we'll have to see his attempt to be a father and a husband as denial? He's suffocating the guilt telling himself he does have everything he wants? I don't know. I still have to fully understand what's going on with Hurley.
Kate doesn't seem guilty, she knows Sawyer is still alive, but maybe thinks Claire is dead?
