Of course I didn't follow this policy with George R R. I read the 'Game of Thrones' and loved it. Read the next 'A Clash of Kings' but although I have the next 2 I'm holding off reading them until the series is finished. Supposedly there was going to be 6 total but not sure now. Even if there will only be 6, I want him to go back and finish. The next, 'Dance of Dragons', supposedly will be out this fall.
G R R Martin used to write TV scripts, one show was 'Beauty and the Beast'. I love his style of writing. Great dialog and action and not overly long description. Also his characters are multi-facetted. "Good guys" do stupid or evil things and "bad guys" do good things. He's also not afraid to kill or maim main characters so the story is not predictable.
