This could very well be a factor.
I LOVE the stand alone episodes and miss them dearly, because this season every episode has tied in to the bigger story arc some how. and I'd love just a monster of the week, no mentions of Dean dying or Sam going evil or the war. just a bad guy monster, they kill it they drive off end of story.
I've heard others complain of this as well.
