Probably two of the biggest factors would be that D-Wars had more theaters, and a steady release date once one was picked. There's also the fact that it was probably more marketable to kids, and the general audience. Whereas with Skinwalkers, the werewolf fans were alienated to an extent by the editing down and the way it was packaged, and it wasn't necessarily something the general audience would respond to, especially enough to hunt down a theater actually showing it. It certainly wasn't marketed to kids even though the movie was toned down.
