| I actually think the part I bolded from Melissa's quote, should be "Lorelai and Luke", that she's referring to LL - because she's talking about "reconnecting" and otherwise it would've ended "on a sad note" ... doesn't sound like it's about the mother/daughter ending to me. Rory and Lorelai weren't apart in season 7, so no need to reconnect ....
And I like that she also admitted the show would've ended differently, that there were many plans for season eight, probably the most significant development expected was in the LL relationship.
And about Melissa not signed for season eight, with Sookie having her third kid, it could've been natural for her to take more time off, keeping her best friend status alive, via phone calls (where we only see and possibly hear Lorelai talking). I thought she was written as a great friend this last season, so it would've been a bit sad to have much less of her on screen, but more Emily/Lorelai would've totally made up for that, at least for me.
