Dakota is a great actress. By taking on a controversial role, she's trying to prove she's not a one dimensional actress.
But also keep in mind that there are security precautions taken because she is so young, playing a mature role.
Another point I'd like to make is, she's acting in the role of being 'raped'. It happens everyday to real girls her age and younger, if anything, she's a role model for stepping up and taking on such heavy material.
