Patrick Dempsey goes from scrubs to mini-skirts in the new romantic comedy 'Made of Honor,' when he dons a kilt to be the maid of honor at his best friend's wedding. Of course, too late, Tom (Dempsey) realizes that he is in love with his best friend Claire (MICHELLE MONAGHAN), and he has to try to win her away from the hot Scot whose proposal she has accepted.
"Tom's a single man with a lot of money and a lot of time on his hands. He doesn't believe in marriage, but, I think, he's lonely and looking for the right person," Patrick says as he explains his character to ET's JANN CARL on the set of the romantic comedy.
Of course, in real-life Patrick had no qualms about tying the knot once he met JILLIAN FINK. The two married on July 31, 1999 and have three children -- five-year-old TALLULAH and four-month-old twins DARBY and SULLIVAN.
The new dad, who admits to changing only three diapers since the boys were born because he has been busy working, will be joined by his family when he heads to Europe for six weeks of shooting -- two weeks in Scotland for the wedding scene and four weeks in England. He and Jill have a two-week rule. They are never apart longer than that. It is even more important now that they have the kids.
"They change," says the actor best known as Dr. McDreamy on "Grey's Anatomy." "I leave in the morning and come back in the evening and they've grown."
So will shooting the wedding scene remind him of his own ceremony?
"There was no big disaster," he says of his own nuptials. "We just had the photographers. They got really drunk and gave us one picture from the whole experience. But we gave everybody Instamatic Cameras and those were some of the best shots. We had a great time."
