My Sister's Keeper was the first book I had ever read of hers and it's the one that made me fall in love with her writing.
But as for what is going on in the news I might lean more towards Nineteen Minutes (Which deals with a school shooting)
You really can't go wrong at all though with any of the books. (Except maybe Tenth Circle--it's my least favorite of her books)
