Clooney Has a Professional 'Crisis'
Oscar winner may direct or star in Smoke House film (or maybe not)
April 23, 2007

George ClooneyWarner Bros. has grabbed the feature remake rights to the documentary "Our Brand Is Crisis" for George Clooney's Smoke House production shingle.

According to Variety, Peter Straughan will adapt the film. The trade paper speculates that it may be a potential directing and starring vehicle for Clooney.

The plan is to spin "Our Brand Is Crisis" as a dark political comedy. The Rachel Boynton documentary focused on the unusual 2002 Bolivian presidential election, in which a candidate hired James Carville's political consulting film. Utilizing the same tactics the film uses in the United States, the candidate's goes from underdog to contender, which isn't necessarily a good thing for Bolivian democracy.

According to the BoxOfficeMojo website, "Our Brand Is Crisis" took in $166,750 during its very limited 2006 theatrical run.

The Smoke House banner is currently working on "Leatherheads," directed by and co-starring Clooney. Other projects on the company's slate include the Coen Brothers' "Burn After Reading," the James Ellroy adaptation "White Jazz" and John Grisham's "The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town."
