Generally, it's a ploy by a station that has a lone star on a scheduled night. UPN did this with Star Trek for a couple of seasons, getting through cliff hangers in one night, and drawing in more viewers than the shows it replaced would.
In this case, the only good show airing on Sunday besides Dead Zone is the 4400.
