I know that was in reference to Chris bailing in ICGS, but I think it also refers to the broader scope. Lorelai knew Rory needed Chris, but she also knew he couldn't be counted on, and she had to compensate for that. Rather than thinking she was all Rory needed, it was more that she was all Rory had.

And I'm not picking and choosing from the canon -- Lorelai didn't deny what Chris was saying in GB, she tried to temper it by telling him Rory was always a self-starter, but that he did still have time.
ETA: The DC is up finally - Lorelai and Mrs Kim. And Luke/Kirk. __________________ The whole business is built on ego, vanity, self-satisfaction and it's total crap to pretend it's not
