| Quote: | I definitely agree, but I'd really like to see her "acceptance" of Luke grow past the house-buying gesture -- if not now, then over the course of the next ten episodes. I think it's especially important if this is the last season, and not because Emily accepting Luke is vital to the show but rather that Emily accepting that Lorelai is truly in love is vital to the show. I'd love for this to be made very clear. Don't know how this will be done, but I'm certain ASP had this sort of closure in mind for the last season. | I don't think it matters at all if Emily accepts that Lorelei is in love or not. I think the issue, from the very first episode, is Emily (and Richard) accepting Lorelei for who she IS not who they think she could still become. Accepting Luke, even if it's only grudgingly, is part of accepting the world Lorelei has created for herself even though it doesn't look exactly like theirs. After all, both Lorelei and Luke own their own businesses, just like Richard. Luke and Lorelei are happy with their successes, not needing them to be on richard's financial scale. They are all in business that provide care for people. Lorelei may be a single mom, but she has provided a secure and happy home for her child...something Richard and Emily tried to do for Lorelei. In finding her own way, Rory has embraced the life of her grandparents, though obviously a little less dramatically than Lorelei did in rejecting her parents all those years ago. This show has always been about hopes and dreams and choices and consequences. Whether the show ends this spring or not, I do hope the writers move toward a bit of recognition of Lorelei (and by proximity, Luke's) accomplishments. It doesn't mean they can't have endlessly funny and poignant scenes of Richard and Emily trying to fit in in Stars Hollow and Luke hanging around the mansion....or maybe those cars that Richard likes to work on. Can you imagine those two bonding over a carburator.... or landscaping....or renovating a room in the mansion? Can you imagine Emily at a family movie night in Lorelei's LR...offering Luke menu ideas at the diner....bonding over parenting issues? This show has never been about the degree to which people love or care about one another....it's about how different people become and stay a family. |
