I would agree with you that the writers seemed to lose their way as the series progressed. I thought the whole first year was as good as a series could get. Year 2 had some interesting eoisodes but I think that is where I thought they started using Jim Valenti more as "filler" than as the really important character that I had always seen him as. By Year 3, it was like he was just comic relief for the writers. Although the last episode had a very touching scene where Jim says good-by to his son. That was the Valenti of old and stands out in my mind to this day.
