| You're right, his speech in 6.17 was very clear on that.. He thought they were broken up,he thought that was what the fight meant.
Rory assumed that he had broken up with her through his sister.
Even Emily could point it out since she saw Marty at that Harvard/Yale Game and most likely at that wake in 5.03 as well

| I think it would have been better for Marty to start off with the truth, and not with a lie. If you tell a lie, you just have to wait till truth comes out. By yourself or by somebody else, in this case the latter. |
