I listened to it, & transcribed the Ryan/Summer stuff
Rachel: I remember in the pilot my favorite, I think, monologue of all time is ‘I stole a car, crashed it and then my mom threw me-’ or whatever. I used to, like, know it verbatim because I feel like that’s all I ever heard for months and months, but-
Melinda: Which one?
Rachel: Ben’s monologue when he meets Marissa- when he meets Mischa.
Josh: ‘Who are you?’ ‘Whoever you want me to be.’
Rachel: Yeah. ‘Who are you?’ ‘I stole a car, crashed it’, you know? (laughs)
Rachel: There’s a moment where he’s like ‘mom, where am I supposed to go?’ and it’s so, like you feel, I don’t remember if that’s the pilot or-
Josh: That’s the pilot, yeah.
Rachel: It is the pilot, and he, the way he delivered it and, like, as a mom myself, my heart just broke and I sobbing. But just how he played it and portrayed it, you feel for him and I think that was so important for Ryan, like you have to feel for him because you wanna root for him and understand why he is being brought in.
Josh: Poor Seth, Summer’s into Ryan!
Rachel: Oh, that’s right. ‘Who is that?’
Josh: Yeah.
Rachel: I remember what I said. ‘Who is that? Well, I’m gonna find out.’ Very determined to find out who that is.
Josh: Yeah, you were.
Rachel: I was determined.
Josh: Summer was a thirst trap, back before the term was coined.
Melinda: Then, Summer, you’re inviting Ryan to the beach house and flirting with him. It was kind of a- it was actually kind of more of a cute little vulnerable, you know, ‘hey, do you wanna come to this party?’
Rachel: Yeah.
Melinda: And then, and then Ryan lies to Seth to get him to go.
Rachel: And says that I invited both of them, right?
Josh: Yeah, which is sweet.
Rachel: Yeah, Ryan was just looking out for his new brother.
Melinda: But right before that you have your Summer classic line of ‘I’m gonna play him…’
Rachel: Oh. ‘I’m gonna play him hot and cold’. I still don’t really know what that means.
Josh: What do you mean you don’t know what that means?
Rachel: You’re gonna play him hot and cold?
Josh: It means you’re gonna be nice to him-
Melinda: I’m gonna be kind-
Rachel: -and then I’m gonna be… oh, okay! I get it now.
Josh: I think it’s pretty self-explanatory.
Rachel: I just, you know, I never really thought it through.
Josh: Clearly.
Rachel: But that makes a lot of sense. Right, hot and cold, and you’re cold… okay.
Josh: Just like ‘hey, what’s up?’ and then ignoring him for a little while.
Rachel: Yeah, I get it, yeah.
Josh: And then like ‘hey, come back’. It’s a classic move.
Rachel: Yep, never knew what that meant. So, how I delivered it, I hope that makes sense.
Josh: Thanks for… you could have asked.
Melinda: Next thing is, Summer’s wasted tumbling into Ryan.
Josh: Mm-hmm.
Rachel: Oh, this is the Chino-
Melinda: Seth walks-
Rachel: This is where Chino comes into play.
Melinda: Yeah, Seth walks out, gets upset when he sees her arms around him.
Josh: Mm-hmm.
Melinda: Seth tells Ryan to go back to Chino, Summer then says…
Rachel: Chino? Eww.
Josh: …the Seth/Ryan stuff complicated by the Seth/Summer and if Summer’s into Ryan piece of it.
