The Bolsheviks were left wing. The Jacobins were left wing. What did that give us? The Reign of Terror. The Soviet Union. Sure, the left wants everyone to be equal, not by choice but by quota. Freedom of choice, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, is all problematic for the left. To the left, freedom equals oppression and censorship equals equality. They've never understood the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. The first is something everyone should want for society. The latter is simply impossible to achieve, and the attempt to do so only brings about totalitarianism.
