X-Men is not to Spider-Man what The Empire Strikes Back was to Star Wars, dragonfire.
X-Men was still a mostly unknown property to mainstream audiences. Also, Sony owned Columbia Pictures, and Columbia Television never made an X-Men TV show in the 70s like they did with Spider-Man, remember? The TV series with Nicholas Hammond that ran for one season before getting cancelled. That was produced by Columbia Television, which is probably why Sony put up a fight for Spider-Man after buying Columbia Pictures, thinking that they somehow had a claim to it, but I think that was BS.
