I am on season 2 of my re-watch and I thought her character was always quite of brooding and unhappy. It's incredible how angsty her character is in general. She is not shown to be happy or carefree outside of her scenes with Pacey. Regardless of how anyone feels about the triangle, it is hard to deny that she doesn't smile that much prior to season 3.
