He was sublty mentioned in the HP books but yes not a lot about him is known. There's a deleted scene that mentioned him here:

In the deleted scene, the three young wizards are shown in the Great Hall. While Hermione is busy stressing about exams, Ron is more concerned with his Chocolate Frog cards. Grindelwald comes into play when Ron reads Dumbledore’s Chocolate Frog biography aloud to Harry.
“Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945,” Ron states.
