Rory/Jess, 354 words. pg. set roughly around season six.
Prompt: comparisons are easily done

Quote:
Every time Rory's afraid of missing Jess too much, she pictures him in the back of the bus with his motorcycle jacket on, the tight set of his mouth betraying nothing. It's the worst feeling she's ever had that she can't find a word for (being totally unaware that he was about to disappear on her, her chest tight with hope that they were going to be okay). She tries to associate Jess with that and not being snuggled on the couch watching Almost Famous for the millionth time because he had a thing for Penny Lane, even if he wouldn't admit it.

But on occasion – very rarely, only when she's exhausted from pouring over an article the night before, or when the distance from home is painful – she imagines she shares the apartment with Jess instead.

It's something she used to think about a lot when she was younger (another apartment, obviously, something more cramped and set in New York, books piled on the window sill, records on the floor).

Jess' things would be vastly different from Logan's. There probably wouldn't be a pool table and it wouldn't be half as neat; the bed would never get made but the fridge would always be stocked with more than beer. He'd keep a makeshift ashtray hidden on the balcony. The books would consume them, would take over every free space until they didn't need couches or tables or desks, they could just build them all out of books. His clothes would have holes in the seams.

He wouldn't go out a lot, wouldn't have a boisterous group of friends. He'd reluctantly let her read excerpts from whatever he was working on, pretending he wasn't hovering over her shoulder as she scanned the words. They would order in, sleep in, get tucked up on the couch and read the classics. She would wake up every morning to Jess' arm around her waist as he kissed an I love you into her hair.

Rory takes a deep breath, pictures him on the back of the bus, and remembers she's got Logan waiting at home.
