Hoffman's character is austistic, but he can still talk to people & had a great memory. His character was also brother to Tom Cruise, but they didn't know each other until I believe after their dad died. So Cruise went looking for his brother who was left the inheritance by their dad, who didn't get along with the character that Tom Cruise played & then went years without speaking to each other.
